Pump controls during an impact...

If the controls were at the rear of the apparatus, the firefighter has limited visibility in this position, not to mention this injury is most likely fatal.

Notice the accessibility of the pump panel in the safety of the walkway, also the visibility (360 degrees) that the firefighter has. If the truck were hit in a rear impact or even side impact, the firefighter has a much greater chance of survival.

Walking vs. riding during an impact...

If the firefighter is walking alongside the truck and the truck is hit by a side impact, the injury is most likely fatal. What if the truck rolled over while the firefighter is walking alongside?

The firefighter is in the standing position inside the walkway. The firefighter at least has a fighting chance.

The gate saddles the firefighter in the standing position and allows full motion to hit the head fire and overhaul.

The 3 point harness system is designed to lock with any sudden movement.

The firefighter is in the seated position inside the six sides of steel protection. This is NOT a position for transport. Speed in this position should be a maximum of 10 mph.

Side impact in the seated position inside the six sides of steel protection.
